Got an old gadget? Don’t let it become a fire hazard! 🔥

A friendly PSA for Australia.

Ever looked at a dead vape, a retired electric toothbrush, or that old smart watch and wondered what to do with it? You’re not alone. Our growing pile of “e-Waste” is a serious issue, but it’s one we can all fix together with a few simple steps.
Let’s call these devices “mini bombs” 💣

Why you ask? because they all contain lithium-ion batteries. When those batteries are crushed, punctured, or get too hot in a regular bin, they can ignite. This isn’t just about a bit of smoke; these fires can take down a whole waste truck or recycling facility, putting workers and communities at serious risk.

The reality is, our e-waste problem is growing three times faster than regular household waste. When we chuck these items in the bin, we’re not just creating a fire risk… we’re also losing out on some valuable resources!

So, what’s the game plan? 🗺️
🟢 Rule #1: The General Bin is a No-Go! Think of it like a puzzle. These items don’t fit in the “general waste” or “recycling” box. They need a special place to go.
🟢 Find Your Drop-Off Point: Australia is getting better at this! Look for “b-cycle” bins at major retailers like Bunnings, Coles or Woolworths. These are for small, loose batteries. For the whole device, check with your local council’s website. They often have dedicated e-waste drop-off points or special collection events.
🟢 Don’t Forget the “Circular Economy”: A fun fact for your next dinner party: your old electronics contain precious metals like gold, silver and copper. By recycling them properly, we’re giving these materials a second life and keeping them in the “loop” instead of losing them to landfill.

This isn’t about shaming anyone. It’s about a collective “Aha!” moment. A tiny change in our habits can make a huge difference for our environment and the safety of our essential workers.
