Did You Know?

Plastic Soy Sauce Fish Containers Will be Banned From 1st September 2025!

Did you know? Big changes are coming to your sushi takeaway experience in Australia?

From September 1st, 2025, those iconic soy sauce fish (and other small, rigid plastic containers under 30ml) will be banned across several states, including New South Wales and South Australia, as part of the ongoing efforts to reduce single-use waste.

While cute, these tiny containers are a huge environmental problem. Their small size makes them difficult to recycle, often falling through sorting machinery and ending up in landfill or, tragically, in our oceans, polluting marine ecosystems and harming wildlife.

This ban is a fantastic step towards a more sustainable future, encouraging business and customers to embrace reusable alternatives or larger, more easily recyclable packaging options.

What does this mean for you?

  • Get ready to see different soy sauce dispensing methods with your sushi.
  • Consider carrying your own small, reusable soy sauce bottle for your takeaway meals.
  • Support businesses that are already adopting sustainable practices!

Let’s make a splash in reducing plastic pollution, one soy sauce portion at a time.
